John Brooks (December 5, – J ) was a writer and longtime contributor to The New Yorker magazine, where he worked for many years as a staff writer, specializing in financial topics. Brooks was also the author of several books, both fiction and non-fiction, the best known of which was an examination of the financial shenanigans of the s Wall Street bull market.   All this, Mr. Norris says, sounds like a tale from the late s, as recorded in John Brooks’s classic book, “The Go-Go Years.” In , the Mates Fund, run by Fred Mates, bought , shares of restricted stock in a small conglomerate called Omega Equities, which was then selling in the over-the-counter market for $24 a share.
